On the first of November my adventure girlfriend and I met at Karawatha Forest for a bushwalk and catch up. She's the person I call when I want to go on an adventure and anything to do with hiking that is more than a few easy kilometres. Our best adventure so far was a six day Great Walk at Carnarvon Gorge a few years ago. Amazing! We hadn't been to Karawatha for years, probably since we were kids growing up in the area. A few years ago a new Discovery Centre was built, and it's pretty cool. There's heaps of educational and fun activities for kids and even as adults we enjoyed learning about the wildlife in the local area and how we can help it thrive. Brisbane City Council also has a plant nursery there for ratepayers where you can show your rates notice and receive two free native trees. It's about time I did that again and keep them alive this time! The picnic area is beautiful and full of well maintained play and barbecue spaces. Daisy Hill can get really busy for picnicking on days like Mother's Day and Australia Day, Karawatha could be a less well known and therefore less busy option for people to visit. The signage for the tracks wasn't great. We found it confusing to know which track entrance we were standing at, and how the tracks intersected when we got out there. Not being a very big forest though, we wandered onto a few different tracks that looped into each other so we had a nice time despite not knowing exactly where we were! The terrain was mostly dry bush, but had variety in terms of creek beds, hills, and rock formations. November was a good time to visit as it wasn't too hot. There were lots of couples out walking, and a few bike riders on the wider tracks. We visited in the morning and were heading off about 11am. Families were starting to arrive to make use of the barbecue spaces.
Karawatha was a pleasant forest to visit and a good option for kids spaces, barbecues, and some light bushwalking. Next time we visit it might be for a public holiday or celebration picnic!
